Odorant spill response – Hurricane Ike disaster

In September 2008, Hurricane Ike devastated the Texas coastline (among other states and countries), causing casualties, floods and massive evacuations.

The entire odorizer station of Galveston had been destroyed by the hurricane, with the odorant tanks being lifted and displaced by the flooding waters. MRR was called in to remediate displaced and damaged equipment, as well as contaminated water. We mobilized a crew and, within 48 hours, were able to begin the spill response work on-site. During this two-week job, tanks were located, drained of odorant, prepared for safe transport and transported to Philippi, WV for treatment. A vacuum truck contaminated with mercaptan was also treated on-site (compressor, tank, valves).
