Odorization Integrity Verification
Setting an odorizer to an injection rate does not, by itself, establish what is happening throughout the gas system. MRR helps operators evaluate odorization performance using operating data, field measurements and analytical tools appropriate to the application. The objective is to understand how odorant is being introduced, how it is carrying through the system and whether the available evidence supports the operator's odorization requirements. It is a more complete view of odorization than relying on a single setpoint, tank level or measurement.

Odorization Is a System, Not a Single Number

Understand What Needs to Be Verified
Odorization performance has several distinct components: the odorizer must introduce odorant consistently, the odorant must remain present as gas travels through the system, and where regulatory requirements apply, the operator must perform the testing required by the applicable jurisdiction. In the United States, 49 CFR 192.625 addresses odorization performance and required sampling, including the concentration at which odor becomes readily detectable - but chemical odorant concentration is not automatically the same measurement as regulatory odor detectability. MRR keeps those questions separate so each data point is interpreted for what it actually demonstrates.
Evaluate the Complete Odorization Program
MRR can evaluate information from multiple points in the odorization process rather than looking at the injector in isolation - gas flow and operating conditions, target and actual injection rates, tank data, odorizer alarms, downstream measurements, instrumented odor-detection testing, mercaptan or sulfur data, MRR OdorTracker™ trends, gas chromatography and recent conditioning or system changes. The purpose is to determine whether the available information tells a consistent story; where it doesn't, the differences can help identify equipment performance issues, odor fade, measurement-location effects or other factors requiring investigation.

MRR Analytical Validation
MRR Analytical Validation, or MAV™, is a structured approach to evaluating odorization performance using the information available from the system, considering the relationship between injection, operating conditions and downstream performance rather than declaring a system satisfactory because one measurement is in range. The scope can support commissioning, troubleshooting, pipeline conditioning, odorizer performance reviews and RNG interconnections, with resulting documentation providing a clearer record of what was measured, under what conditions, and what the results indicate. MAV is intended to strengthen technical understanding and documentation; applicable regulatory testing and compliance determinations remain governed by the operator's own procedures and jurisdictional requirements.
Odor Detectability for Critical Facilities
Hospitals, campuses, high-rise buildings and other complex facilities present a specific odorization challenge: gas may be properly odorized at the meter but become less detectable as it moves through the building. Complex piping networks, long duct runs, HVAC systems and multiple building levels can all contribute to that loss, and the risk is highest in exactly the spaces where people are relying on their sense of smell to notice a leak. MRR evaluates odor detectability at representative points throughout the facility, identifies conditions that may contribute to odor fade, and provides practical guidance to help maintain detectable gas where people are present.
