Our Timeline

Setting the Standard Since 1996
This is the Story of Midland Resource Recovery

1

Origins

Jan Strmen immigrates from Slovakia to Canada and begins developing expertise in natural gas odorization, bringing a hands-on engineering mindset to the practical challenges faced by utilities and operators.

MRR Is Founded

Jan incorporates Midland Resource Recovery in Cornwall, Ontario, to solve a long-standing industry challenge: the safe removal and treatment of obsolete odorization equipment. Using techniques he developed and patented, Jan's team works odor-free while providing permanent, environmentally sound treatment of contaminated equipment.

The process is quickly adopted across the natural gas and propane industries.

Early Expansion

MRR expands across North America, diversifying into odorant storage and distribution, odorizer installation, equipment rental, odor control products, servicing, consulting, and training, and begins building the long-term utility relationships that define it today.

U.S. Operations Begin

MRR opens its first U.S. location in Philippi, West Virginia, with a treatment and processing facility plus odorant storage and delivery infrastructure. The same year, MRR begins partnering with Chevron Phillips Chemical to supply high-quality odorants throughout the region.

Growth and the Next Generation

In 2011, MRR Canada and MRR USA become separate corporations serving the odorization industry. Juraj Strmen, Jan's son, joins the business, carrying forward his father's engineering foundation while advancing pipeline conditioning, odorant handling, and field methodologies, with his wife, Isabelle, leading finance operations as the company’s CFO.

MRR Canada opens a new office and manufacturing facility (2016), MRR innovates its de-odorization process (Molecular Desorption™), and innovations like odor tracking and flow monitoring follow.

Present Operations

From headquarters in Summerstown, Ontario, and Philippi, West Virginia, MRR has grown from a small family workshop into an international engineering and service company.

Today MRR has served 200+ utilities across North America, with 100+ supported annually, delivering odorant, equipment, and field services coast to coast in both Canada and the United States.

Gary Menard, MRR's first employee, still works with the company today.

Looking Ahead

Guided by the standards Jan set three decades ago, MRR continues to grow its portfolio and footprint, with a new operations base planned for Alberta and the Western USA.

The focus remains what it has always been: innovating across the gas odorization industry to serve clients more safely, efficiently, and responsibly.
